The Terrain of Hoxxes is the geographical makeup of Hoxxes' underground layers. With different appearances and formations, these features all serve to contribute to varied environments.

Common Rock[]

Common Rock

Common rock layer as it appears in Crystalline Caverns

This layer of material is found in and constitutes the majority of every biome in Hoxxes. It will appear differently depending on the overall theme of the area, but is always the most basic ground material. It can be dynamically destroyed by the Dwarves through a large amount of methods including by Pickaxe, some weapons, explosives, and more. Hostile Creatures are capable of damaging this rock layer also.

It does not only vary in appearance, but in durability as well. Different environments will have separate "hardness" values for their variant of common rock, which denotes the amount of pickaxe hits required to break a chunk of it.

The Common Rock layer will be shaped to generate the various caves in Hoxxes.

It is named as "Common Salt" on Salt Pits, "Sand Stone" on Sandblasted Corridors, and "Petrified Wood" on Hollow Bough. Glacial Strata contains two varieties, one known as "Common Rock" and the other known as "Ice," both of which function identically.

Bed Rock[]

Bed Rock is the layer right before Compressed Granite, indicating that the player is approaching the map's boundaries.

Type Tough Rock
Hardness 5 (Extremely Hard)

Its surface is rough, barely reflective and taupe colored. It's a tough material, requiring five hits from a Pickaxe before it breaks, the broken chunk will be smaller compared to the Common Rock layer.

Bed Rock cannot be drilled by the Driller's Reinforced Power Drills, larger drills such as the one on the Drop Pod and Resupply Pod can though. Glyphid Oppressors, Glyphid Dreadnoughts, Dreadnought Hiveguards, Glyphid Bulk Detonators, Glyphid Crassus Detonators and Nemesises can dig through Bed Rock. However, the Bulk Detonator's death explosion does not remove the material.

Compressed Granite[]

Compressed Granite

Compressed Granite marks the map boundaries. It is found in a sphere around the map, surrounding the destructible terrain around the procedurally generated tunnels and caverns. There is a thin layer of another sturdy material named Bed Rock.

Its surface is smooth, shiny and completely black. It is an incredibly tough material, requiring five hits from a Pickaxe before it breaks, the broken chunk will be smaller compared to the Common Rock layer.

Compressed Granite cannot be drilled by the Driller's Reinforced Power Drills, larger drills such as the one on the Drop Pod and Resupply Pod can though. Cave Leeches's reach length is infinite so you will never be safe from the cave leeches, even from 200 meters/metres away from it while you’re trying to pet and date a Loot Bug, though you’ll get the longest cave leech ever seen before! Yeah!!

Compacted Dirt[]

Compacted Dirt

Compacted dirt as it appears in Fungus Bogs

Compacted Dirt is a naturally occurring material in the caves of Hoxxes. It serves as an obstacle preventing passage through generated tunnels and caves.

This layer has the appearance of a dense ball of dirt. It must be mined/destroyed in order for Dwarves to make it past. The hardness of Compacted Dirt is the same as the Common Rock for the biome, except for biomes which have Common Rock with a hardness of 3, in which case the Compacted Dirt will require 2 pickaxe hits instead of 3, and in the Sandblasted Corridors place, it take only one hit to destroy. In Hollow Bough it is called Dirt instead of it being called compacted dirt as it is a little bit more lighter brown than green, and in the ice zone, it’s called compacted dirt but it looks like frozen dirt because the common rock everywhere around is covered with/in frozen ice.

Slag[]

This is not a naturally occurring layer in Hoxxes, and will only be created in the aftermath of certain explosions. It appears as a tough gray stone like material, which will coat the crater made by a detonation. It takes 2 pickaxe hits to give way.

It is named as "Carbon" on Hollow Bough and "Ice" in Glacial Strata. In Magma Core, this layer is replaced with Hot Rock.
