Flares, also sometimes called Glowsticks are small throwable temporary light sources. When thrown with the F key, they are tossed in the direction your Dwarf is facing at an arc and will tumble around. They commonly bounce around until they settle, usually at the bottom of rooms.
Flares are universal to all Dwarf Classes. The color of the flare and the light it provides is dependant on the current Dwarf class: Engineer and Driller throw orange colored flares, while Scout and Gunner throw blue ones. This color difference is purely visual and does not affect the performance of the flare in any way.
Flares light will last for 20 seconds by default and 30 seconds when upgraded. After this time is up the flare will stop providing light, but remain dormant and still be visible in the dark. There is no currently known limit to the ammount of flares allowed out at one time.
When thrown, flares are automatically replenished, taking 12 seconds to refresh one flare. The maximum ammount of flares that can be carried is 3 by default and 4 with an upgrade.
