The Mactera Spawn is the most common of the Mactera, and illustrates precisely why DRG's position is to annihilate this species utterly. Fast, efficient, and utterly horrible, the Mactera Spawn will do its best to overwhelm its enemies through sheer numbers, and then swoop in to liquify and suck out the remains using a proboscis the approximate size and shape of an old-war bayonet. Shoot to kill any time you spot any of these flying horrors.
— Miner's Manual Description

The Mactera Spawn is a hostile creature found on Hoxxes IV. It is the most common member of the Mactera species, and a semi-familiar sight down in the caves. It takes flight by four large wings found on its abdomen, and is always found flying. Like Glyphid Grunts, they can sometimes be found idly wandering the caves, but most of the time they are seen flying into action to fight the Dwarves. While Mactera Spawn aren't always common, they spawn in great numbers if the Mactera Plague mutator is active.

Mactera will often accompany Glyphids during Swarms, forcing the Dwarves to focus their gunfire on both the ground and the air.

Stunning a Mactera will cancel their spitting charge, forcing them to start over.

Combat[]

Health and Armor[]

Mactera Spawns have moderate health and light armor, so with a good ranged weapon, they are not too difficult to take down. This is highlighted even more so with its extremely vulnerable abdomen which takes critical hits when shot. Moreover, their vulnerability to fire makes them an easy target for any pyro-inducing weapon.

Attacks[]

The Mactera Spawn's primary technique is a yellow spit attack. To do this, they will "lock on" to a single target and face them exclusively, hovering a set distance away from their target. It will then puff up its abdomen for a second before firing.

Alongside their spit attack, Mactera Spawn are highly mobile foes. While their spit requires them to remain stationary, they can use their flight to juke the Dwarves, zipping about in random directions.

Kursite Infection Variant[]

Kursite Analyser booting up! Volatile Kursite deposits in the area are infecting the local wildlife! Get as many samples as you can from the infected beasties, we need to get to the bottom of this!
— Mission Control

Kursite Mactera Spawns are rare Mactera Spawns infected with the parasitic crystalline Kursite biomineral that often appear when a Kursite Analyser is activated. It is unknown if these specimens were infected only when the Analyser is activated or has long been infected but stayed dormant until the machine's activation.

What is known is that these infected Mactera Spawns are easily distinguishable from its non-infected kin by the presence of large glowing Kursite deposits emerging from its back and head as well as its blue vulnerable abdomen.

Attacks[]

Other than visual appearances, Kursite Mactera Spawns behave almost exactly the same as a regular Mactera Spawn, with the only exception being that it obviously drops a giant chunk of Kursite to be used and extracted once eliminated.

Because Kursite Mactera Spawn usually hover in front of the player, they are the easiest Kursite variety to deal with as most often then not, their Kursite usually drops in front of the player and the Mactera Spawns themselves are just as vulnerable as their normal kin. Compared to the Kursite Acid Spitters which are notorious in hiding in far away spots or the Kursite Praetorians which are tanky and often comes in groups backed by swarms.

Of the Kursite varieties, the Mactera Spawn provides a middle ground between the Acid Spitter and Praetorian; the Analyser requires a moderate amount of Kursite from these Mactera Spawn.

Elite Variant[]

The Elite Mactera Spawn is the elite version of the regular Mactera Spawn. Like all Elite enemies, the Elite Mactera Spawn looks almost identical to its regular counterparts; being only distinguished by its aura of distinct vertical red lines with the words 'elite' above their healthbar when scanned and looked at.

Attacks[]

Elite Mactera Spawns boasts a substantial amount of health to the point that swarms of them would becomes a serious problem for players. Moreover, their increased damage makes them an increasing threat in any levels spawning them.

Due to this, the need to target their weakpoints becomes far more strategic when it comes to dealing with them.
