Naedocyte Shockers are the soldiers of the Naedocyte Collective, usually found roving in great swarms. Their primary objective is to protect their Breeders, as well as build up the ambient static charge that both serve as their primary source of nourishment and primary means of attack. A most peculiar group of Hoxxes natives - but one that should not be underestimated, despite their almost cute appearance. We have lost many miners to them already.
— Miner's Manual Description

The Naedocyte Hatchling is a hostile Creature. It will only spawn from Naedocyte Roe, which in turn can only spawn from Naedocyte Breeders.

Hatchlings are the product of a hatched Roe sack. When it bursts, the Roe sack spawns five Hatchlings at once which will seek and destroy any threats to the Breeder. Functionally they are almost identical to the Naedocyte Shocker with the same amount of health and damage, and the same levitation ability. However they do not have the ability to shock a Dwarf, and their attacks will not slow the player down when they land.

Alone a Hatchling is no threat due to its low stats and predictable movement, but in high numbers they can prove to be quite the nuisance. Many Hatchlings can swarm a single Dwarf at once, surrounding him on all sides and chipping away his health. If Breeders go ignored for long enough, a swarm of Hatchlings on top of all the other enemies can be overwhelming for a team.

The presence of Hatchlings can indicate that a Breeder is nearby, and the wispy trails they leave behind linger for a second after their death which can reveal their flight path. If one sees Hatchlings emerging from an unknown location, there's a good chance that a Breeder is nearby. Until the Breeder is killed, there is no limit to the amount of Hatchlings which can spawn.

Tips

  • Any strategies which work to deal with Naedocyte Shockers also work with the Hatchlings - crowd control tools, melee attacks and the Thorns perk are all the best counters to a Hatchling.
  • Although destroying the Hatchlings is important, don't forget that killing the Breeder is the true priority as it will never stop spawning Hatchlings for as long as it is alive.

Trivia

  • While hatchlings are implied to be the infant versions of Naedocyte Shockers, they have several differences from their parent creature, most notably the short spikes on all four of their "limbs".
